Meet The Team

Melville Douglas is an investment-led business.  Our management and investment professionals work as a team and are passionate about what they do.  Collectively both teams have in excess of 300 years of wealth management experience.

Michael Laws

Managing Director

Michael began his investment career at Melville Douglas in 1998. Michael is a portfolio manager and the co-Fund Manager of the Melville Douglas High Alpha Fund, our flagship local equity fund. He holds a B.Com degree, is a CFA® Charterholder, and is a Certified Financial Planner™ professional.

Bernard Drotschie

Chief Investment Officer

Bernard joined Melville Douglas in 2002 as a portfolio manager and analyst prior to which he worked for ABSA Asset ManagerHe is also the lead manager on the Melville Douglas Global Growth Fund (USD) and co-manages the Melville Douglas Balanced Fund (USD) and the Melville Douglas SA Bond Fund. He holds a B.Com (Hons) degree in Econometrics, is a CFA Charterholder®, and is a Certified Financial Planner™ professional.

Thandi Ngwane

Head: South Africa

Thandi joined Melville Douglas in 2019. Prior to this, Thandi spent 11 years in the asset management industry where she was Head of Private Clients and Head of Strategic Markets at Allan Gray, with the latter seeing her take on the responsibility for developing distribution strategies and investor education for Allan Gray’s Strategic Markets. Thandi  holds a BSocSci LLB LLM, Post Graduate Diploma and Advanced Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning. She is a Certified Financial Planner® professional and an admitted attorney.

 

Nigel McKenzie

Chief Operating Officer

Nigel joined Melville Douglas in 2013 as Business Manager. Prior to this he was Head of Research and a portfolio manager at STANLIB before joining the stock broking industry. Nigel has over 20 years’ experience in the investments, stock broking, insurance and banking and he is currently the Chief Operating Officer of Melville Douglas. He holds a B. Com (Hon) cum laude and M. Com in Economics.

Oliver Sonnbichler

Head of Funds

Oliver is the Head of the Fund Management Group, which offers Melville Douglas investment solutions to a broad range of distribution channels though our domestic and international fund ranges and institutional mandates. Oliver joined Melville Douglas in 2011 as the Managing Director of Melville Douglas International. He has a B Com (GDA) from the University of Cape Town and an H.Dip. Tax from the University of Witwatersrand.

Mervin Naidoo

Head: Advisory

Mervin joined Melville Douglas in 2013. He is a portfolio manager and assumes overall responsibility for Melville Douglas’s equity research process, as well as being an analyst for global financial services companies. Prior to joining Melville Douglas, he held senior equity research roles at Credit Suisse, J.P. Morgan, and Andisa Securities. Mervin is a qualified CA (SA) and holds a B.Com (Hons) degree.

Susan Gawith

Portfolio Manager

Before joining Melville Douglas in 2006, Susan was a rated sell-side analyst covering consumer stocks, and is Melville Douglas’s lead analyst on the retail, hotel and leisure sectors. Susan is also the co-manager of our key long-term capital growth fund – the Melville Douglas Balanced Fund (ZAR). Susan holds a B.Sc degree and an MBA.

Paolo Senatore

Head: SA Equity & Institutional

Paolo joined Melville Douglas in 2018 as Global Strategist. Prior to this he was with Firstrand Group since 1995 gaining over 20 years financial market experience. During 2000, he became Chief Investment Officer of RMB Private Bank Portfolio Management. He was Chief Investment Officer for Ashburton Investments, FirstRand’s asset management initiative, since its inception and was instrumental in consolidating the groups various asset management businesses and investment processes. He holds a MSc (Mech Eng).

Simon Bothner

Head: Portfolio Management Western Cape

Simon joined Melville Douglas in 2002 as a dealer and research analyst. After a five-year stint, he left to join Deutsche Bank, and thereafter worked for Coronation Fund Managers. In 2013, he re-joined Melville Douglas as a Portfolio Manager for the Western Cape region. Simon has a BBusSci (Hons) degree and is a CFA® Charterholder.

Trevor Lukhele

Head: Portfolio Management Gauteng

Trevor joined Melville Douglas in 2014 as a Portfolio Manager and analyst. Prior to this, Trevor was a portfolio manager at Ashburton Investments, and a Client Fund Manager at STANLIB Asset Management. Trevor has over 10 years experience in investment management. He has a B.Com degree in Economics and Finance, and an MBA. 

Natalie van Rooyen

Head: Diversified

Natalie has over 10 years of investment experience. Natalie previously worked as a Multi-Asset Fund Manager at F&C Asset Management in the UK and joined Melville Douglas in May 2015. She holds a BSc (Hons) Economics and Finance degree from the University of Bristol and is a CFA® Charterholder

Chris Stead

Head: Portfolio Management: Jersey

Chris leads Melville Douglas’s International Portfolio Management team. Having worked in the investment industry in senior roles for over 30 years, he has in-depth experience in understanding clients’ objectives and delivering tailored solutions. Chris joined Standard Bank in 1990 and is a Chartered Wealth Manager, Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment and holds the Private Client Investment Advice and Management Certificate. Chris is responsible for portfolio management in Jersey.

Karl Holden

Head of International Fixed Interest and Currency Strategy

Karl joined Standard Bank in 1991 and specialises in global fixed income and currency markets. He is lead manager of the Melville Douglas Income funds and also manages the investments of a number of high-net-worth clients. Karl is a Chartered Wealth Manager, Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment and holds the Private Client Investment Advice and Management Certificate. Karl is based in Jersey.

Justin Maloney

Head: Global Equity

Justin joined Melville Douglas in 2014 and has over 24 years’ experience of managing global equity funds. He co-manages the Melville Douglas Select Global Equity Fund and covers a range of sub-sectors for the team. Prior to joining the company, he was a global equity fund manager in London for Sanlam and F&C Asset Management. He holds a BSc (Hons) degree in Business from Cass Business School, University of London. He is also a CFA® Charterholder and a Chartered Wealth Manager. Justin is based in Jersey.

James Hibbs

Head of Melville Douglas Diversified International

James joined Standard Bank in 2010 and has over 18 years’ experience in financial services, including seven years at Coutts. James focuses on Melville Douglas’s East African and Corporate and Business Banking clients. He is a Chartered Wealth Manager, Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment, and member of the CFA® Institute. James holds the Private Client Investment Advice and Management Certificate, Investment Management Certificate and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners Diploma. James is based in Jersey.

Jerry Mills

Portfolio Manager

Jerry has worked in the financial services industry for 33 years specialising in servicing the wealth management requirements of private clients. He joined Standard Bank in June 1999 and has been a portfolio manager for the past 13 years. He holds BSc (Hons) in Financial Services and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. He is a Member of Chartered Institute for Securities and Investments.

Rob Stewart

Portfolio Manager

Rob joined Melville Douglas in 2005 as a portfolio manager and analyst covering Commodities and the Mining and Resources companies. Rob holds a B.Sc (Hons) degree, a post-graduate diploma in Management, is a CFA® Charterholder, and is a Certified Financial Planner™ professional. 

Simon Bradbury

Fixed Income and Currency Strategy

Simon joined Standard Bank in 2002, with over 30 years’ experience in the finance industry. He has built up extensive knowledge of global wealth management solutions, specialising in international fixed income and currency markets. He is co-manager of the Melville Douglas Income and Enhanced Income Funds, whilst he also manages the investments of a number of high-net-worth clients. Simon is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute For Securities and Investment and has been awarded Chartered Wealth Manager status. 

Gary James

Portfolio Manager

Gary joined the Melville Douglas team as a Portfolio Manager in June 2021 and has worked in the offshore financial services sector since 2010. Prior to joining Melville Douglas, he spent 8 years as an investment professional for a leading independent consultancy firm. He is a Chartered Fellow of The Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) and holds the Investment Advice Diploma and Private Client Investment Advice and Management Certificate. Gary is based in Jersey.

Harry Manners

Assistant Portfolio Manager

Harry joined Standard Bank in 2010, first working in the operations department and in 2016 moved into Investment Dealing where he worked for 4 years. He now assists portfolio managers in the day-to-day running of the portfolios and is working to become a portfolio manager himself. Harry is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute For Securities and Investment and holds a Diploma in Investment Advice. Harry is based in Jersey.

Ben Andrews

Assistant Portfolio Manager

Ben assists portfolio managers in the day-to-day running of the portfolios. He joined Standard Bank in 2015, first working in the operations department and in 2016 moved into the Stockbroking and asset management team where he is working to become a portfolio manager. He is training towards the Investment Advice Diploma. Ben is based in Jersey.

Mzimasi Mabece

Head of Fixed Income: South Africa

Mzimasi has more than 14 years financial market experience spanning both quantitative analysis as well as portfolio management and has managed both fixed income and equity funds. Prior to joining Melville Douglas, he was Head of Fixed Income at Mvunonala Asset Managers. He previously held Portfolio Manager roles at Prowess Investment Managers and Old Mutual Investment Group (OMIGSA) and also worked at Sanlam Investments as a fixed income Quantitative Analyst. Mzimasi holds a BSc degree.

Trevor Lukhele

Head: Portfolio Management Gauteng

Trevor joined Melville Douglas in 2014 as a Portfolio Manager and analyst. Prior to this, Trevor was a portfolio manager at Ashburton Investments, and a Client Fund Manager at STANLIB Asset Management. Trevor has over 10 years experience in investment management. He has a B.Com degree in Economics and Finance, and an MBA. 

Simon Bothner

Head: Portfolio Management Western Cape

Portfolio Manager

Stuart joined Melville Douglas in 2010 after qualifying as a CA (SA). He is a Portfolio Manager and equity analyst covering the Real Estate sector. Stuart holds a BBusSci (Hons) degree in Finance, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting. He is also a CFA® Charterholder.

Refilwe Moroka

Head: Domestic Equity Research

Refilwe joined Melville Douglas in 2017. She is a domestic equity reseach analyst covering the diversified industrials sector. Prior to joining Melville Douglas she was a Diversified Lending & Leveraged Credit Risk Manager dealing specifically in the FMCG, Retail sector at Standard Bank. She holds a B.Com Accounting degree as well as a B.Compt (Hons) in Cost Management Accounting and is a CFA® Charterholder.

Greg Wood

Fund Manager

Greg started his career at Melville Douglas in 2004. He is comanager of the Melville Douglas High Alpha Fund, a position he has held since the inception of the fund, and is also the lead analyst for the Healthcare sector. Greg holds a BBusSci degree and is a CFA® Charterholder.

Paul Swanson

Portfolio Manager

Paul joined Melville Douglas in 2015 as a portfolio manager and analyst. Prior to this, Paul spent 16 years at STANLIB Asset Management, initially as an equity analyst, and then as a fund manager since 2007. He holds an M.Com and is a CFA® Charterholder.

Derinia Mathura

Fund Manager

Derinia joined Melville Douglas in 2013 as an equity analyst in the global space, covering a range of sectors. She is the co-manager of the Melville Douglas Global Equity Fund. Prior to joining, she worked for RMB Morgan Stanley as a sell-side equity research analyst. Derinia has a BBusSci (Hons) degree in Finance and is also a CFA® Charterholder.

Tracy Hughes

Portfolio Manager

Tracy joined Melville Douglas in 2004 and has been a Portfolio Manager since 2013. She holds an IMM marketing diploma, is a Certified Financial Planner™ professional, and is currently a CFA® candidate.

Matthew Urquhart

Fund Manager

Matthew joined Melville Douglas in 2015 on the Associate programme. After successfully completing the programme, he permanently joined the business as a junior portfolio manager and analyst covering the Commodities and Mining and Resources sectors. Matthew holds a B.Com Investment Management degree, and is currently a CFA® candidate.

Natalie van Rooyen

Head: Diversified

Natalie has over 10 years of investment experience. Natalie previously worked as a Multi-Asset Fund Manager at F&C Asset Management in the UK and joined Melville Douglas in May 2015. She holds a BSc (Hons) Economics and Finance degree from the University of Bristol and is a CFA® Charterholder

Christian Cecchi

Portfolio Manager

Christian has 18 years’ experience in both local and international markets, having previously worked at Barclays Stockbrokers in London. In 2008 he relocated back to South Africa and joined Standard Stockbroking. He holds a B.Com Honours degree in Investment Management.

Zinhle Zwane

Fund Analyst

Zinhle Zwane joined Melville Douglas in 2013. She has recently joined our Fund Solutions team as a Fund Analyst. Zinhle holds a B.Com degree in Finance and Economics and is currently a CFA® candidate.

 

Singa Gungqisa

Portfolio Manager

Singa joined Standard Stockbroking in September 2017. He previously was an equities trader and a research analyst at various sell-side and buy-side houses. He holds a B.Com Honours in Business Sciences. Singa has completed the Registered Persons Exam and is a member of the Investment Analyst Society of South Africa. He is a registered JSE trader and has completed his RE 5 certification. Singa is currently a CFA® candidate.

Cyril Pule

Institutional Manager

Cyril joined Melville Douglas in 2019 as an Institutional Manager. Prior to this, Cyril was a Pricing Manager at Standard Insurance Limited and a Credit Analyst at Nedbank Private Wealth. He has a BSc degree in Actuarial and Financial Mathematics and is a Technical member of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (TASSA).

Warren de Wet

Business Development Manager

Warren joined SBG Securities as a Sales Trader on the Institutional Desk in 2001. He then moved to Standard Stockbroking in 2016 as a Portfolio Manager. He holds an IMM Diploma and has completed the FAIS RE3 and Registered Personas Exams. He is also a registered Securities Trader with the Johannesburg Securities Exchange.

Jonathan Bowling

Business Development Manager

Jonathan has 11 years’ financial markets experience and started his career as an Institutional Equity Derivative Trader at Brockhouse Cooper. Prior to joining Standard Stockbroking, he headed up Citadel’s International Trading desk and has subsequently spent the last 4 years working as a Portfolio Manager within Standard Bank. He holds a B.Com Financial Management degree and has completed his Registered Persons exams from the South African Institute of Financial Markets.



Preeti Sukha

Research Analyst

Preeti joined Melville Douglas in 2020 as the Global Healthcare Equity Analyst. Prior to joining the team, she was a sell side equity research analyst at SBG Securities. Preeti is a qualified chartered accountant, and holds a B.Acc Science and HDip Acc (Hons) degree.

Lieketseng Pitse

Research Analyst

Lieketseng joined Melville Douglas in July 2021 as a Domestic Equity Research Analyst, covering the Consumer Sector. Lieketseng has extensive experience in various facets of investment management industry, having been involved in research, portfolio management and ESG during various stages of her career. Prior to joining, she was an equity analyst at Momentum Unconstrained Strategies; she was also at STANLIB where she was a member of the Value Equity Franchise, responsible for research and co-managing the Value Unit Trust, Shari’ah Unit Trust and the Small-Cap Fund, in addition to managing Institutional mandates. Lieketseng holds a BCom Accounting degree.

Chris Willis

Senior Analyst

Chris joined Melville Douglas in 2022 as a Senior Analyst covering global technology and internet stocks. He began his investment career in 2013 and spent six years with a Johannesburg hedge fund as a senior analyst and assistant portfolio manager. He has experience in bonds, equities, and commodities, and has spent time consulting to private clients, financial advisors, pension funds and institutional allocators. Chris holds a B.Com (Hons) degree and is a CFA® Charterholder. 

Loftty Mmola

Research Analyst

Loftty joined Melville Douglas in 2021 as an Equity Research Analyst primarily responsible for the Resources sector. He previously held an equity research analyst role at multiple investment houses including FNB Wealth and Investments, Ashburton Investments and Vunani Securities. He was also at Shanduka Resources largely focusing on mining and commodities research and analysis. Loftty hold a BCom degree in economics and applied economics as well as a BCom honors degree in economics.

Mvomvo Nogwina

Business Development Manager

Mvomvo joined Melville Douglas in 2019. Prior to this, he spent 8 years in the asset management industry in client servicing, operations and business development roles serving both direct clients and financial advisers. Mvomvo holds a BComm (Honours) in Economics and a Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning.

Sibabalwe Kasi

Senior Analyst

Sibabalwe joined Melville Douglas in 2021 as a Senior Analyst covering global financials, payments and fintech stocks. Prior to that he spent over six years on the Allan Gray Investment Team as a generalist primarily covering JSE listed shares. Before starting his investment career, he was an Economic Strategy Consultant with Genesis Analytics, completing a number of projects focusing on financial institution strategy and financial inclusion across the African continent. Sibabalwe holds Bachelor of Business Science with Honours in Economics.
